It determines whether the results of your massage fade within days or continue to build.

Lymphatic drainage massages are lauded for clearing toxins and reducing swelling to feel de-puffed, defined and glowy. Professional treatments create immediate, visible shifts, but how you support the body in-between sessions determines whether that investment compounds or disappears.

Long before I understood the science behind it, I’ve been practicing lymph drainage through daily habits - movement in the morning, washcloth exfoliating, legs elevated in the evening.

Years later, after studying health science and guiding clients through lymph focused Pilates, I’ve witnessed how professional treatments become more powerful when layered with simple and consistent immune cells. Unlike the circulatory system, it has no heart to act as a central pump for moving lymph fluid. It relies on:

Breath and muscle contraction

Gentle pressure

Gravity

Movement becomes the body’s natural lymph fluid pump.

After controlled sequences in Pilates, clients often remark they feel less swollen or noticeably lighter. What they are experiencing is fluid movement.

When muscles contract, they help guide lymph along its pathways. It’s a quiet physiological response and one of the reasons consistent movement changes not just how the body feels, but how it appears.

Complementary Daily Lymph Practices

Even after a beautifully executed massage or a well-designed Pilates session, lymph fluid can still accumulate if the system isn’t consistently supported.

If you get lymphatic drainage massages, these three daily habits help you maintain that sculpted, de-puffed feeling without relying on more frequent treatments. They elevate what you’re already doing.

1. Using a Washcloth in the Shower

Dry brushing is quite popular for lymph drainage, but it requires an extra step which I don’t have time to do. Instead, I use a washcloth as a more efficient approach.

Warm water already primes circulation, take advantage of this by using a soft cotton washcloth to gently sweep lymph fluid towards the heart:

Ankles → knees → hips

Wrists → underarms

Stomach → slow clockwise circles

Jawline → down the neck

Two to three minutes with light pressure is sufficient. Lymph sits just beneath the skin and responds to subtlety, not force.

This technique mirrors the directional flow of professional lymph drainage while leaving the skin softly exfoliated and refined.

2. Lotion for Daily Gentle Drainage

For years I’ve applied Nivea body lotion post-shower, smoothing upwards rather than absentmindedly. Direction matters.

Body lymph drainage:

Feet → hips

Hands → shoulders

Stomach → soft clockwise circles

Face lymph drainage:

Jawline → ears

Cheeks → temples

Sides of neck → collarbones

These pathways correspond with key lymph nodes and gently encourage drainage between professional sessions without relying on tools and intensity, just consistency.

3. Legs Up the Wall

Before bed, elevate your legs for five to ten minutes.

Lie on your back.
Let your legs rest against the wall.
Breathe slowly and fully.

Gravity helps assist fluid movement, reduces swelling, and restores lightness by morning.

In Pilates, we use similar gentle inversions such as feet in straps or hips elevated. Clients consistently leave those sequences feeling less swollen. This is the reason.

Sometimes the most effective intervention is simply allowing the body to work with gravity instead of against it.

Base Lift Hair Oil: when I lived in London the hard, lime-scale causing water did a number on my otherwise fuss-free hair. It led me down a path of finding the best hair oil to mollify the damage. I discovered Base Lift Root-To-Tip Hair Oil which incorporates both amla and rosemary (plus the nozzle design is targeted for convenience). I’ve been loyal to them even though I’ve moved to NYC and have to pay the international shipping and duties. It’s worth it - it’ll still cost less than expensive hair growth treatments at the derm.

Other options: unfortunately Base Lift does sell out sometimes (because it’s that good) so as a back up I have Fable and Mane and Sahajan. Both contain amla and the scent is intoxicating.

Massage Your Scalp (3 Minutes!)

I section my hair down the center and apply the oil directly to the scalp starting with the crown of the head

Using my fingertips or a scalp massager, I massage in small circles for 3 minutes working my way out of the crown and to the sides

Then I massage any excess product into the ends of my strands and tie my hair back

Workout & Wash

After my session (usually 30-50 min), I wash my hair with a double shampoo to remove excess oil. I keep a scalp massager in the shower and use it while shampooing.

Conditioner goes on the ends only

Repeat Consistently

Twice a week is all it takes to see silkier texture in weeks and thicker, healthier growth over months.

Why This Works

Amla (Indian Gooseberry): this is the ultimate ingredient used for thousands of years by Indian women. It’s rich in Vitamin C and antioxidants, which helps strengthen hair follicles, reduces breakage, and promotes thicker growth.

Rosemary Oil: modern research supports what herbalist have known for centuries - rosemary stimulates circulation in the scalp, supports new growth, and adds natural shine. Notably, a 2015 study found rosemary oil was as effective as 2% minoxidil (Rogaine) in promoting hair growth for those with androgenetic alopecia PubMed.

Scalp Massage: massaging your scalp increases blood flow and nutrition to the follicles. Beyond hair, it’s soothing, grounding, and a small moment of self-care to look forward to.

Thick, silky hair doesn’t require hours, expensive treatments, or complicated routines. Just 3 minutes, twice a week, with a little intention and the right oils, and your hair (and mind) will thank you.

Thanks for reading Ami! Even after a decade of frequent wear, they haven’t lost their shape or fit, staying just as comfortable as the day I got them.

What truly makes them an insider secret is their thoughtful design for active movement—no slipping, no bunching, and just the right amount of compression to support your core and legs. They’re offered in a wide range of lengths and sizes for diverse bodies, making it effortless to transition their sleek, minimalist style from reformer sessions to everyday wear.

While these leggings are durable on their own, I recommend a few care tips to keep them in prime condition:

Avoid putting them in the dryer: heat can break down elasticity and cause leggings to lose their shape faster.

Air them out after use rather than rolling them up and tossing them in the hamper: this helps reduce moisture buildup and prevents lingering odors.

If you want leggings that work as hard as you do—ones instructors trust and recommend frequently—these are the ones to turn to. Give them a try, you might just discover your new go-to pair for the long haul.

This recommendation is unsolicited and unsponsored…it’s purely based on my experience as an instructor, long-time wearer, and deep desire for active wear that isnt too sporty looking.

How a Pilates Instructor Strength Trains people

Building muscle requires a highly individualised approach:

Specific load

Specific reps

Specific progression

Specific range of motion

Group Pilates classes aren’t designed for this level of personalisation. They can be strength training if the biomechanics and loading match your specific needs, but most classes cant support this in depth.

This is why I recommend my clients let Pilates be Pilates. Let strength training be strength training. And allow them to complement each other.

My Weekly Workout Routine (Simple, Sustainable)

As a Pilates instructor with a background in health science, I utilise principles of exercise physiology to strategise and approach my workout routine:

Strength training builds muscle, pilates improves how well you use that muscle. Doing both, but separately, gets better results.

3× / week — 30 min strength training

Goal: Training near muscle failure

Method: Progressive overload with weights divided into upper body, lower body, and full body sessions

2× / week — 50 min Pilates

Goal: Improve precision and control of movement

Method: mat or apparatus

This routine supports my muscles, bones, joints, and long-term health without burnout.

Strength Training 3x/week - build and keep muscle

The goal of strength training is to build and keep muscle to support your bones and long term mobility.

Muscle doesn’t grow because you “feel the burn” in a workout, it grows because the body receives a distinct signal it needs to synthesise protein to grow thicker muscle fibers and get stronger.

This signal has three parts:
<div Progressive Overload

Progressive overload is consistently challenging your muscles to do more than they’re used to, giving your body a reason to respond and change.

In weight lifting, this can be achieved by:

Increasing the weight (load)

Adding reps or sets

Utilising a more challenging range of motion

The biggest mistake I see people make is going too heavy, too fast. I design my 30-minute lifting sessions around simple, targeted exercises so I can effectively track progress and continue to challenge my muscles without causing injury.

Why lifting supports progressive overload better than a Pilates class:

Pilates isn’t designed to progressively overload muscles, it’s designed to work the spine in a variety of ways

Increasing the load in a pilates class is difficult unless you know how biomechanics operate, weight lifting allows you to precisely measure, track, and progress the weight, reps and sets

2. Training to near muscle failure

Muscle is made of many fibers. For it to grow it has to work hard enough so most of the fibers are recruited, which then triggers protein synthesis to fuel muscle building.

I explain it to my clients this way:

Your muscles are made of many “helpers” (fibers)

When the job is easy → only a few helpers are needed

When the job gets hard → more helpers come in

When the job is seemingly impossible → almost all helpers jump in

You don’t need to make the helpers collapse on the floor, just hard enough so they think “wow, that was tough.”

This is not about:

Exhaustion

Shaking

Being drenched in sweat

Those are sensations, not signals.

It’s about giving the muscle a clear, local challenge.

Why lifting supports nearing muscle failure better than a Pilates classes:

Pilates isn’t designed to train near failure, it’s designed for consistent activation to maintain precision and control

Typically it takes 6-30 reps to get to failure, on average a Pilates exercise is 6-15 reps

3. Hypertrophy

Muscle fibers don’t grow during training, they grow in recovery. This process is called hypertrophy.

Hypertrophy happens through:

Sleep

Eating nutritiously

Adequate rest between sessions

Being sore and exhausted all the time is actually preventing you from building muscle. Recovery makes results attainable and sustainable.

My recovery days include:

Walking

Active stretching

Gentle mobility

I want to make sure I’m rested so muscle actually grows, fatigue clears, and motivation stays high.

Pilates 2x/week - deepen movement quality

Pilates focuses on the quality of movement, not how much force you produce.

Rooted in rehab and restoration, Pilates uses fewer reps, less momentum, and more coordinated movement to:

Build mind–muscle connection

Improve movement precision and control by engaging deeper “stabiliser” muscles

Support joints and stability

It strategically improves how your body uses what you already have by focusing on adapting the nervous system and joints.

Nervous System:

The mind-muscle connection in Pilates is essential. mislead clients or even risk injury.

Whether you’re new to Pilates or a seasoned pro, it pays to watch out for these red flags when trying out a new instructor:

“Pilates body” language:
Beware if an instructor says you need to look a certain way to fit in, ALL bodies are pilates bodies. The myth of “lean and long” is outdated and unhelpful—the right instructor will support your goals, not box you in. I once took a class where the person next to me was made self-conscious by an instructor saying her shoulders would slim into a “Pilates body” with time. This isn’t supportive and simply unnecessary.

Constantly cueing “tuck your pelvis”:
Flattening the low back (tucking) as a prolonged position is outdated and may lead to pelvic floor issues, weakened abdominals, and tighter hip flexors. In pilates tucking/imprinting the spine has its place, but cues should be specific and carefully monitored, not repeated as a rule for everyone and every exercise. Tucking turned from a cue into a culture mostly through barre, but pilates is not barre, it values alignment over burn.

Glorifying the “Pilates Shakes”:
Shaking muscles might mean you’re working hard, but it’s not a sign of muscle growth. Instructors should avoid presenting shakes as a badge of honour. Social media is full of videos where instructors highlight the shakes, further misleading other instructors in making them aspirational. If your instructor is getting the majority of their continuing education from social media it’s a sure sign you should move on. Find out what these shakes really mean here.

Supportive instruction changes everything. If you’re searching for a Pilates class or instructor, trust your gut and look for someone who uplifts and educates, not one who echoes old myths.

Have you spotted any of these red flags in a class—or overcome them on your own journey? Share your experience or questions below. I’m happy to help you navigate this world!

Why You Shake in Pilates (And Why It's muscles getting tired and your nervous system scrambling to keep control and stability amid challenging, precise movements. Here's why:

Your muscles are made of many motor units, when muscles fatigue some of these motor units cause jerky, shaky movements.

Pilates targets the deepest layer of muscles the “stabilizers,” which dont get activated in most workouts. Learning new movement patterns in Pilates challenges brain-muscle communication, increasing shaking initially.

Muscle Growth Requires Progressive Overload

Muscle growth—or hypertrophy—is the process where muscle fibers increase in size. To achieve this, muscles need consistent, progressive overload, meaning they must be challenged with increasing resistance or weight over time. This process also requires sufficient rest and proper nutrition.

Pilates is incredibly effective for improving joint stability, endurance, flexibility, and balance, but typical Pilates group classes are unable to provide the hyper-personalized progressive overload model needed to create significant muscle growth.

Social Media Overglorifies the Shake

The Pilates Shake has been somewhat mythologized as a glowing metric of hard work and physical transformation. While it’s true shaking indicates effort and muscle fatigue, it is NOT a reliable marker of muscle hypertrophy or long-term gains.

This overemphasis leads many to misinterpret their progress or even push themselves too hard in pursuit of visible shakes, which prevents optimal muscle loading, increases injury risks, and reduces the likelihood of sticking to a consistent movement routine.

Shakes Signal Adaptation, Not Long-Term Results

Rather than being a “muscle-building medal,” shakes are a sign your muscles and nervous system are adapting to new movement challenges. Over time, as you build coordination, control, and muscular endurance, these shakes will decrease.

The goal of Pilates is to be restorative. It’s a mindful, precise movement practice to promote longevity, injury prevention, and functional movement. Embrace the shakes as a sign your body is adapting, but don’t mistake them for instant muscle building.

As a Pilates professional, my approach is to help clients understand what success really looks like: improved body awareness, balanced strength, and sustainable movement habits to reduce injury risk. So, the next time you feel those shakes, celebrate the work you’re doing in exploring new parts of yourself, and know that true muscle growth is a longer journey.

Have you ever experienced the Pilates shake during your practice?
